 JDK i.e. Java Development Kit is basically used to develop java based programs. So if you want to create java programs and compile and execute them then you need to download JDK.

Where as JRE Java Runtime Environment is required java software to execute java based application. JRE is an implementation of JVM (java virtual machine).

Each JDK contain JRE with it. All JDKs contains one (or more) JRE's along with the various development tools like the Java compiler, bundling and deployment tools, debugger, libraries, etc.

Systems on which java application runs require JRE which is basically a JVM to work those java applications properly.

JRE = JVM + Java Packages Classes(like util, math, lang, awt,swing etc)+runtime libraries.(For common people)

JDK = JREs +Java compiler + bundling + deployment tools+ debuggers + libraries (For Java Developers)
